According to the company, the XC90 has the most luxurious cabin Volvo has ever offered in any of their models. Volvo XC90 Exteriors
Like mentioned above, this SUV has undergone major cosmetic overhaul, especially in terms of its exteriors. Its front profile features a stylish bonnet, whose design is quite refreshing compared to other models. The windscreen is pretty large and integrated with a couple of rain sensing wipers. The main attraction would certainly be the large radiator grille, which comes with vertical slats. This is treated with a lot of chrome and at the center of this grille, the company’s insignia is also neatly embossed.
Surrounding this grille is a trendy looking headlight cluster, which is further equipped with LED headlamps and day time running lights. Another noticeable aspect is that the bumper getting a new design and is painted in body color. A wide air dam is integrated to it along with a couple of air ducts. The sleek and thick chrome slats on these air ducts further gives an appealing look to its frontage. Its side profile looks simply great with neatly carved wheel arches that are fitted with a set of modish alloy wheels. The black colored B-pillars and chrome window sill look quite remarkable, whereas the door handles and outside mirrors are painted in body color.
In addition, the door mirrors are further integrated with side turn indicators. On the other hand, its rear end too comes with some interesting aspects that are easily noticeable. It features a bright and well designed tail light cluster equipped with turn indicators and an expressive boot lid on which, it has the firm’s logo with chrome finish. The sporty spoiler gives a trendy appeal, while the windscreen includes defogger and a wiper as well. Besides these, it has a pair of fog lamps as well as two chrome exhaust pipes, which altogether gives this SUV a striking look.
Volvo XC90 Interiors
With its spare design aesthetic and high-quality materials, the 2017 Volvo XC90’s cabin is undeniably handsome. Its matte-finish wood, genuine metal and even real carbon-fiber accents are pleasing to the eye and the touch, and its controls are generally laid out in a logical and uncluttered manner. The 9-inch central touchscreen is oriented vertically rather than horizontally, which Volvo says allows for superior map viewing and menu structures. In usability testing, we found that the screen responded quickly to our inputs, but the climate, radio and heated-seat controls can be inherently cumbersome to access quickly.
Front seat accommodations are comfortable and spacious, although tall drivers who slide the seat back might find their elbows hanging off the backs of the door and center armrests. The front seats provide exceptional long-haul comfort. Second-row passengers are treated similarly well and enjoy a healthy amount of legroom, although the third-row seats are best left to short trips or smaller folks and children. The available child booster seat built into the center section of the 40/20/40-split second-row bench can be scooted forward to put its occupant within easy reach of parents. However, families with more than one youngster should note that Volvo’s XC60 offers two of these integrated booster seats.
The XC90’s cargo capacity is ample. With all the seats up, there’s 15.8 cubic feet of space available behind the third row. Fold the second- and third-row seats down and maximum capacity rises to 85.7 cubic feet. By either measure, these figures are at the top of the segment. The standard power tailgate includes a hands-free feature that opens the door when you wave your foot under the rear bumper.
Volvo XC90 Gearbox
The 2017 XC90 is available with three different engine configurations, all of which are turbocharged. The base T5 engine is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that feels slightly underpowered given the XC90’s size and heft. It provides 250 horsepower and will certainly get you down the road, but for more brawn, the T6 engine is a better option. Volvo took that turbocharged 2.0-liter engine and added a supercharger to it, creating the 316-horsepower T6. That extra power helps XC90 T6 models zip to 60 mph in around 6.6 seconds (T5 models take 7.5 seconds).
Rounding out your engine choices is the 400-horsepower T8, which combines the twin-charged T6 engine with an electric motor. It boosts acceleration again, pushing the XC90 to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds. Regardless of engine, all models come with an eight-speed automatic transmission that operates smoothly. These three engine configurations offer a good selection of performance and provide more options than some rivals. For instance, the Acura MDX and Cadillac XT5 are available only with a V6.
Fuel economy is one of the XC90’s biggest highlights, and as you might expect, the XC90 T8 hybrid is one of the most efficient SUVs in the segment. It earns a combined 25 mpg between city and highway driving, but it can also travel for up to 14 miles using electric power only. This means that quick errands around town or short daily commutes may not require fuel at all.The gas engine will recharge the T8’s lithium-ion battery pack (once it’s depleted) as you’re driving. You can also plug in the SUV to a 220-volt outlet and recharge the battery in around two and a half hours. In the class, only the Lexus RX Hybrid (31/28 mpg) is more efficient than the XC90 T8.
Volvo XC90 Driving
Sensibly, this family SUV majors on comfort. The handling’s not bad, but the main thing is relaxed well-being. Steering is feel-less but there’s not too much roll or understeer, and as it’s 4WD it has secure traction on wet roads. Caveat: so far we’ve tested only the ones with optional adaptive air suspension. The dash displays on most models are entirely virtual, and there’s an optional HUD too. The turbo-and-supercharged petrol has good performance but only four cylinders, so why not just get the diesel? Unless that is you need the amazing tax-avoiding ‘twin-engine’ plug-in hybrid, with 320bhp for the front wheels and electric drive at the back for another 80-odd. Safety aids help make driving even more relaxing.
Volvo XC90 Safety Features
Known for making safest passenger cars, Volvo has equipped the XC90 with the most advanced of safety features. It’s built on an intelligent structure, which is not only light, but also rigid. Inside the cabin, you not only feel cocooned in luxury, but also in a shell which will keep you away from any harm.
Safety features on offer include airbags, ESC, ABS, Roll Stability Control, Driver Alert Control, Road Sign Information, Speed Limiter, Safety cage, Safety belts with reminders and pretensioners for all seats, Prepared front safety belts, Run-off road protection, Brake pedal release, Whiplash Injury Protection System.
There are also innovative safety features which requires using RADAR. As the government of India banned the usage of RADAR frequencies in passenger vehicles, these features are deactivated for now. Now that the government has de-licensed select ultra low frequency bands, we could see Volvo introduce them in the future. Below is a brief video, explaining one of the new innovative feature on offer with the XC90.

Volvo XC90 Summing Up
The Volvo XC90 starts at Rs 64.9lakh ex-Delhi for the Momentum and jumps a sizable amount to Rs 77.9lakh for the Inscription. Where does all that extra money go? A large chunk would be towards that spectacular sound system but the other features add up too, like the fine Nappa leather, head-up display and heated/cooled front and middle seats. The heart yearns for the Inscription but simple math says that the Momentum is an excellent deal. It has the air suspension, full Sensus system, big sunroof, a 10-speaker 330W sound system and also comes with smaller 19-inch wheels, which will only improve the ride quality. Momentum or Inscription, there’s no doubt that the XC90 stands out from the crowd and that it’s interiors feel unique and special, much more so than the typical German cabin. It’s no driver’s car but it is an absolute pleasure to be in. Volvo already has 266 bookings, more than half the allocation of cars for India this year. There’s no doubt the XC90 is going to do good things for Volvo in India. It deserves to.
